Regalos de Ropa

Lisa´s personal growth project was to gather TONS of clothes from her Church and to bring them to Guatemala to donate to people here. It was a bit complicated to figure out how to get the 11 extra bags down here, but we did it, and it was so worth it. On Monday night we gathered at school and divided up all the clothes into 56 little bags to deliver to some of the most needy families from the school where we´re working. Then on Wednesday, we divided up into groups with the kids and some of the teachers from the school and walked all over the town to, up and down the side of a huge hill to make our deliveries. I´ll leave it to the kids to describe the experience, but some pictures here should give some hints. We learned a lot that day.

going with the kids that i teach to thier houses was really cool and also kind of sad. for some reason i was expecting the kids to all live relativly close to the school but some of them lived a ways a way. one or two even had to go through like a forest to get to school. these kids walk alone through these places that were really thick with trees and trash just to get to school each day.
then going in to the house, we only got in to one house. but in that one house they like had chickens and really skinny dogs running around in this house that was just basically put together with some scrapes, it was really sad. and what we saw from the other ones was also kind of sad and you saw how poor they were. but was really cute was that each kids was SO SO happy to give thier mother the bag of clothes and they were all so happy with the clothes and to meet me and chloe who were teaching thier child english. it was something i will never forget.

going to see were the kids lived and meeting their moms was a truely moving experiance. I think it was an eye pening experiance for all of us. I know personally when i started to do this project I though I was just giving some kids some clothes but since being here I have learned that we all are doing so much more. We are all learning that while we may have our own indiviual struggles we are thankful for those struggles and not theres. I am thankful for everything I have and no longer take some of the most simple things such as a tiled floor for granted.

I never thought giving presents would be so hard. As we went around handing bags of clothes to the selected kid´s parents, I couldn´t help but feel sad and ever so happy at the same time. The most bizzare was when we visited one kid´s house, where their house was owned by a richer family. They worked for them, almost like indentured servants or something. It was really hard to think about, but I feel better knowing that we helped them out, at least a little.
